Theo Bruinsma
Theo Bruinsma is a Dutch food technology industry executive with a career spanning more than four decades in food processing machinery. He is best known as managing director of Marel Netherlands — the food processing equipment manufacturer formed through the 2008 acquisition of Stork Food Systems by Marel — and as chairman of GMV, the Dutch sector association for machinery manufacturers in agri, food, and pharma. He succeeded Jan Hak as GMV chairman on 12 December 2014, after Hak’s 28-year tenure. In addition to his industry roles, Bruinsma serves as a non-executive board member at PME pensioenfonds, the pension fund for the Dutch metal and technology industry.

Career
Townsend Engineering (1976–2006)
Bruinsma began his career at Townsend Engineering, a manufacturer of food processing machinery specialising in sausage and meat processing equipment. Over thirty years he held successive roles including customer service manager, technical director, sales manager, engineering manager, general manager, and ultimately President of Townsend Engineering Inc. (January 1992 – April 2006).
Stork Food Systems and Marel (2006–2016)
In 2006, Bruinsma moved to Stork Townsend, the entity formed when Stork Food Systems re-acquired the Oss-based sausage and meat processing machinery operations. He served as President of Stork Townsend at Marel from May 2006 to April 2011.
In November 2007, Marel — an Icelandic food processing equipment manufacturer founded in 1983, listed on the Icelandic stock exchange since 1992 — announced the acquisition of Stork Food Systems for €415 million. The deal was completed in May 2008, combining the two companies’ specialisations: Stork’s poultry and meat processing equipment with Marel’s fish processing technology. The combined entity had a turnover of approximately €660 million and more than 4,000 employees.
Bruinsma commented on the acquisition: “There was already strategic cooperation between Marel and Stork Food Systems.” He characterised the combination as complementary and described Marel as having solid long-term investors backing continued development.
Following the integration, Bruinsma served on the Board of Directors of Marel (January 2009 – January 2013) and as Director of Special Projects at Marel (November 2013 – May 2016). He also served as Director of Marel Poultry. The Oss facility where he worked as director — originally operated as Protecon under Unilever, then Townsend, then Stork, then Marel — is one of the principal manufacturing locations for poultry and meat processing lines. In January 2025, JBT Corporation completed its acquisition of Marel, bringing the Icelandic company into the US-based food processing equipment group.
Salm Partners LLC (2013–present)
Since July 2013, Bruinsma has served as Chairman of Salm Partners LLC, a US-based contract manufacturer of fully cooked premium sausage and hot dog products. This role reflects his long-standing expertise in sausage processing machinery and the meat processing sector built at Townsend and Stork.
GMV chairmanship
Bruinsma became chairman of GMV on 12 December 2014, succeeding Jan Hak who had held the position for 28 years. GMV (Gemengde Machinefabrikanten Vereniging) is the Dutch sector association representing manufacturers of food processing machinery, packaging equipment, and biobased systems. It is part of FME, the main Dutch employers’ federation for the technology industry.
Under his chairmanship, Bruinsma has emphasised the growing role of technology and mechatronics in food processing, and the importance of cross-sector collaboration to maintain the Netherlands’ globally competitive position in agrofood machinery. In a 2015 appearance on the regional TV programme Booming Brabant he stated: “Food and health will become an increasingly important theme in the food sector in the coming years.”
In a published interview, Bruinsma described the trajectory of food machinery technology: “We hebben de invloed van de technologie in de agro-food, zeer sterk zien binnenkomen” — noting that equipment has become significantly more intelligent and more closely integrated with human operators through mechatronics. He foresees production systems that are capable of highly individualised output rather than mass-uniform processing, and argues that Dutch expertise in sustainable, high-output food production on limited land area is a major exportable advantage.
The Dutch food machinery sector represented by GMV occupies an exceptional global market position: Dutch manufacturers account for virtually all egg incubation, sorting, and packaging lines worldwide, the majority of global milking robots, the majority of global poultry processing lines, and substantial shares of bread, cheese, animal feed, and potato processing equipment.
